Bio

Terry Bywater continues to build upon the talent and dedication which saw the Redcar native make his major debut at the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games, aged just 17.

Paris was his seventh successive Games representing ParalympicsGB - equalling his former teammate Simon Munn as one of the longest serving players.

At Paris 2024, the Wheelchair Basketball team achieved the nation’s best result in the sport in 28 years by claiming second place and the silver medal. In a pulsating final, ParalympicsGB fought back from 12 points down but succumbed to 73-69 defeat to Team USA who claimed their own title of the greatest team ever after making it a historic three titles on the trot.

Born without a tibia and fibula in his left leg which resulted in its amputation at two-years-old, Terry’s introduction to the sport came through an open day in Middlesbrough with local club the Teeside Lions. Since then, he has competed in over 20 international tournaments resulting in 14 medals of various colours.

They include four Paralympic bronze medals back-to-back in 2004 and 2008 followed by his clutch overtime performance to beat Turkey in 2016 and then in Tokyo.

He has also been a key player in three successive European titles between 2011 and 2015 as well as the historic 2018 world title - a first for GB since 1973 - in Hamburg.

A huge Middlesbrough fan, Terry enjoys going to games as well as watching his 15-year-old son play football on the weekends. As a sporting family, Terry and his son often play wheelchair basketball together where there’s always a bit of father-son rivalry!
