Bio

Sophie started riding at the age of eight at her local riding school and took up non-disabled dressage at the age of twelve. In 2008 she became the first para-equestrian dressage rider to win a non-disabled international competition, after she finished first in the junior international class at the Hickstead under-21 international.

She was the first para-equestrian dressage rider to compete on both a non-disabled junior team and the para-equestrian dressage team in the same year (2010) competing on the dressage Young Rider European team, as well as being selected as part of the World Equestrian Games para-equestrian dressage squad.

Sophie received an MBE in the 2013 New Year Honours list, topping-off a fantastic year that saw her take Team gold, and two Individual silver medals at the London 2012 Paralympic Games. She has won nine medals for Great Britain with her Rio partner Valerius, competing at the 2011 and 2013 European and 2014 World Championships.

On her second Games appearance at Rio 2016, Sophie won her first individual Paralympic gold on Valerius.

She posted a score of 74.857 in her test at the Olympic Equestrian Centre to finish ahead of Belgium’s Michele George by just half a point.

In the Team event, Sophie’s contribution to performances by team-mates Natasha Baker MBE, Anne Dunham OBE and Sophie Christiansen CBE ensured that ParalympicsGB remain unbeaten in the Team event since the sport’s first outing at Atlanta in 1996.

She went on to win her sixth Paralympic medal in the in the individual freestyle test grade IV, taking silver with a total score of 76.150%, pipped to the gold as 42-year-old Belgium rider Michele George finished with 76.300%.

In total, the ParalympicsGB equestrian riders won 11 medals and seven gold, beating their London haul.

Since Rio, Sophie has gone on to win three silver medals at the 2018 World Equestrian Games and is also making a name for herself as a coach.
