Stephen Clegg

Stephen Clegg claimed his first ever Paralympic gold medal at Paris 2024 with victory and a new world record in the S12 100m backstroke, adding S12 100m butterfly gold days later.

Stephen comes from a family of Paralympic athletes, with both older sister Libby and brother James winning medals for ParalympicsGB at London 2012 in athletics and swimming.

He started swimming in 2014 and quickly took to the sport, breaking through to make his major debut at the 2016 IPC Swimming European Championships in Funchal, Portugal, where he made three finals and set a new personal best in the 400m freestyle S13.

He made his Paralympic debut at Rio 2016 where he recorded his best result in the final of the 100m backstroke S12, finishing in 5th place.

It wasn’t until 2019 where he grabbed his first major medal with silver in the S12 100m butterfly at the World Championships in London.

And in the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, Clegg became a triple Paralympic medallist winning silver in the S12 100m butterfly final and two bronze medals in the 100m freestyle and backstroke finals.

Returning at the 2022 World Championships, he became a double world champion in the S12 100m butterfly and backstroke events before claiming his first Commonwealth medal with silver in the S13 50m freestyle in Birmingham.

In 2023, Clegg retained his S12 100m backstroke title while adding silvers in the 100m freestyle and butterfly disciplines.
