Jody Cundy

Jody Cundy won his ninth Paralympic gold medal in Paris as a powerful performance saw him help to retain the Open C1-5 750m team sprint with teammates Kadeena Cox and Jaco van Gass.

Jody became the first British male athlete to win medals at seven consecutive Paralympic Games at Tokyo 2020. Jody won gold along with Jaco van Gass and Kadeena Cox in the Mixed 750m Sprint C1-C5 and silver in the Men’s 1000m time trial C4-C5.

He always enjoyed cycling as a child but it was swimming where he excelled after taking up the sport at the age of 10. He made his international debut at the IPC Swimming World Championships in Malta in 1994, winning gold in the 100m butterfly S10.

He was selected for his first Paralympic Games in Atlanta 1996, once again winning gold in the 100m butterfly S10. He defended this title in Sydney four years later, as well as picking up another in the 4x100m freestyle relay S10 and he also won a bronze medal in the 100m backstroke S10.

After adding another bronze to his collection in Athens, Jody started exploring the possibility of switching sports and, after impressing the coaching staff at a test at Newport velodrome, was selected for his major international debut at the 2006 Track World Championships in Aigle, Switzerland, where he won the C4 kilo. This would be the first of twelve world titles on the track over the next decade; he won the C4 kilo eight times in a row and added four mixed team sprint titles to his impressive collection of rainbow jerseys.

He competed in the fourth Paralympic Games of his career, and his first in cycling, at Beijing in 2008. Jody set a world record on the way to winning the C4 kilo title, making him one of only a handful of athletes that have become Paralympic champion in two different sports. He also won mixed team sprint gold alongside Darren Kenny and Mark Bristow.

At London 2012, Jody missed out on a medal in the C4-5 kilo after slipping coming out of the start gate and then being refused a restart. He did go on to claim a bronze medal in the C4 individual pursuit, defeating Colombia’s Diego Gomez in the bronze medal ride.

Cundy made up for the disappointment of missing gold at London four years earlier as he won two Paralympic titles in Rio - which were the sixth Paralympic Games of his career.

In the kilo time trial, Cundy beat a strong field, including team mate Jon-Allan Butterworth, to take gold in a new Paralympic record of 1:04.492. That winning performance from Cundy was repeated in the team sprint where he teamed with Louis Rolfe and Butterworth to win the gold in a world record time of 48.635.

Cundy’s form continued into 2017 with yet another world title - his 13th - as his unbeaten streak in the kilo continued at the UCI Para-cycling Track World Championships in Los Angeles.

He extended his run twelve months later with yet another time trial gold at the 2018 UCI Para-cycling Track World Championships in Rio de Janeiro before winning his 15th world title in the team sprint alongside Rolfe and Butterworth once more.

In 2011 Jody set up the cycling team Para-T, made up entirely of elite para-cycling athletes, to help promote disability sport.
