Tom Hamer made his international para-swimming debut at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014 when he won silver – a competition in which he made history by being the first S14 athlete to represent Team England at the Commonwealth Games.

Hamer made his IPC Swimming World Championship debut at Glasgow 2015, winning bronze in the 200m freestyle S14 and narrowly missing a podium place in the 200m individual medley SM14. Ahead of his Paralympic debut, he became European Champion in the 200m freestyle S14 and took bronze in the 200m individual medley SM14 at the 2016 IPC Swimming European Championships in Funchal, Portugal.

At Rio 2016 Tom made his Paralympic debut and took silver in two events, the 200m individual medley and the 200m freestyle S14.

Across his career, Tom has set British records in the 50m, 200m and 400m freestyle S14 and the 200m individual medley SM14.

He was forced to withdraw from Tokyo 2020 but he returned in 2022 to win Gold as part of the Mixed S14 Relay Team at the World Championships in Madeira.

The Tokyo Cycle

Tom made a strong start to the Tokyo 2020 cycle when he was asked to represent Team England at his second Commonwealth Games. He improved on his 2014 result and won gold in the 200m freestyle S14 in a world record time.

At the 2018 European Swimming Championships in Dublin, Tom continued to impress as he won gold in the 200m freestyle S14 and bronze in the 200m individual medley SM14.

He also picked up bronze in the 200m individual medley and was part of a world record breaking quartet in a non medal event, the mixed 4x100m freestyle relay S14.

On home soil at the 2019 World Para Swimming Championships in London, Tom repeated his silver medal success from Rio in the S14 200m freestyle and also took silver in the 4x100m mixed freestyle relay.
