Nick Cummins says wheelchair rugby gave him a “sense of purpose” after contracting an illness when he was 19-years-old at Leeds University.
He was diagnosed with meningitis and was looking for a sport to try after watching the Beijing 2008 Paralympics. Originally, he tried wheelchair basketball, but he ultimately decided that rugby was better suited to his strengths.
Nick was invited onto the GB squad in 2014 before making his full debut at the 2015 BT World Challenge and he is a double European champion from 2017 and 2019.
He made his Paralympic debut in Tokyo, where he helped the team to an historic Paralympic title and received an MBE for his services.
They narrrowly missed out on a medal at Paris 2024 finishing fourth after a narrow 50-48 defeat to Australia - a team they had been in the group stage
Nick says that is his greatest achievement in the sport along with two national titles at club level with Leicester Tigers. He has also completed a PHD in History at Leicester University.
