It was back-to-back Paralympic medals for Matt Rotherham as he won silver in the men’s B 1000m time trial alongside Neil Fachie.
Matt Rotherham has become a fixture of the Great Britain para-cycling programme, piloting James Ball and Neil Fachie to a host of world titles, to which he added a Paralympic gold medal at Tokyo 2020. Riding with Neil Fachie in the B 1000m time trial the pair smashed the world record to claim secure their place on top of the podium.
A European champion as a junior and a senior national medallist across the sprint events, Matt Rotherham also displayed tandem pedigree before joining the para-cycling programme, having won the national tandem title in 2011 and 2015.
In 2017, after looking for ways to prolong his track cycling career, Rotherham linked up with James Ball, and took that year’s world championships by storm.
They secured the sprint double after riding together for just seven weeks, alerting the world of para-cycling to Rotherham’s abilities as a pilot.
He was partnered with Neil Fachie for the 2018 season, and success continued in abundance, as the pair won the kilo and the sprint at the world championships and Commonwealth Games.
They added the 2019 world sprint title to their collection in Apeldoorn, and reclaimed their kilo title in 2020 in Milton, and during the course of their partnership have continued to lower world records, now holding the fastest times in history for the tandem kilo and tandem flying 200m.
