Bio

A keen basketball player growing up, Broom-Edwards transferred all his jumping skills to become one of the world’s best para-athletics high jumpers. He won his first international medal in 2013 with silver at the World Championships in Lyon, France.

His medal-winning streak continued for the next three years as he picked up silver at the 2014 European Championships and again at the 2015 Worlds, then European bronze in 2016.

At the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, Broom-Edwards claimed his first medal at that level, securing silver to join the illustrious list of medallists at the Games. A year later he added a third world silver to his name.

All changed in 2019 as Broom-Edwards returned from an Achilles injury in terrific style, claiming his first world title in the T64 high jump. Silver at the 2021 European Championships then followed, but he converted that to gold once again at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games with a season’s best clearance of 2.10m.

In a great moment of sportsmanship at the 2023 Worlds in Paris, Broom-Edwards decided to share the gold with Poland’s Maciej Lepiato after the pair both jumped the bar at 2.05m.

Most recently he retained his world title in Kobe back in May.

Unfortunately Jonanthan suffered injury in the build-up to Paris 2024 and had to withdraw from the competition after a re-occurrence while competing at the Stade de France,

In 2022, Jonathan was a contestant on the celebrity bootcamp series SAS: Who Dares Wins and outside of sport, he runs his own sports massage therapy business.
