Taunton took up the sport at secondary school in Taunton, England, where her running talent was spotted by her PE teacher who suggested she join the local athletics club. She joined Taunton Athletics Club at age 12.

She has a condition that affects her speech and language, however she has competed regularly against athletes who do not have an intellectual impairment.

Taunton broke the T20 5000m world record at the British Championships 2020, held at the Manchester Regional Arena and went on to win bronze on her Paralympic debut at Tokyo 2020 in a new personal best of 4:35:34.
