Gemma made her Paralympic debut at London 2012 as part of the women’s team event with Justine Moore and Gabi Down but since Rio 2016, she has been the sole female member on the ParalympicsGB team.

Gemma had a varied sporting background in her education at school, competing in figure skating, athletics and hockey before complex regional pain syndrome changed her life at 15-years-old, where eventually she would have her right leg amputated.

She was introduced to wheelchair fencing while studying law at Durham University in 2011 and within a year, she was on the performance squad and qualified for London.

After competing at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, finishing 8th in the Women’s Category A Épée, she broke into the World top ten and became the first British woman ever to win a Wheelchair Fencing World Cup in 2018.

She claimed her first major medal earlier this year at the 2024 European Championships with silver after being narrowly beaten 15-14 by Ukraine’s Breus in the Women’s Épée A category.

Away from fencing, Gemma has a career in media where she has worked as an assistant producer for BBC Sport alongside motivational speaking. A fun fact about Gemma is she watches the Disney classic Cool Runnings before every competition.
