Moustachioed man Blaine Hunt took silver on his Paralympic debut in the Men’s C4-5 1000m time trial which kicked off a medal rush in the Velodrome on Day 2 of the Paralympics.
Blaine Hunt is a triple World Champion in the C5 1Km time trial and world record holder. He made his Paralympic debut at Paris 2024.
He won his first World Championship gold in the C5 1km time trial in 2022 and defended his title in front of a vociferous home crowd at the 2023 World Track Cycling Championships in Glasgow.
The fastest qualifier looked super composed and smooth to go half a second faster than qualifying to take the win in 1:03.341. America’s Christopher Murphy won silver, meaning the top two were the same as the 2022 result.
“I could hear the crowd cheering and couldn’t let them down,” Hunt said after the race.
He became a triple world champion in Rio de Janeiro in 2024 when as the last rider he won in 1:03.475, an average speed of 56.7 km/h!
As a teenager Blaine sustained trauma to his right leg during routine knee surgery, the surgeons drill slipped and severed his popliteal artery. Nerve damage along with a limited range of motion in the ankle joint mean Blaine was eligible to compete as a Para cyclist. Blaine joined the Great Britain Cycling Team in March 2021 and is a qualified British Cycling track coach too
Before a career as a cyclist Blaine, who is known for his trademark handlebar moustache worked in the television industry. He has worked for every major broadcaster in the UK covering major sporting events such as the Olympics, Commonwealth Games and Champions League.
