Already a keen amputee footballer, Ben found wheelchair basketball by chance on his way to watch his beloved Arsenal play Manchester United. It was during a stop at a service station on his way to Old Trafford when he was introduced to the sport, and soon after Ben gave the sport a go for the first time.
After taking a short break to focus on his education and career development, Ben returned to the GB Performance Programme in 2015.
In 2017, Ben and his junior team made history on the courts of Toronto as the first British team to win the U23 World Championship title.
Despite major heart surgery, Ben made his senior debut at the 2019 European Championships, where he helped the team win gold. He then made his Paralympic debut in Tokyo to earn a bronze medal for ParalympicsGB.
At Paris 2024, Ben was part of the team that achieved the nation’s best result in the sport in 28 years by claiming second place and the silver medal. In a pulsating final, ParalympicsGB fought back from 12 points down but succumbed to 73-69 defeat to Team USA who claimed their own title of the greatest team ever after making it a historic three titles on the trot.
A huge dog lover, Ben has two rescue dogs who occupy a lot of his time when he’s not playing wheelchair basketball. Ben rescued his Spanish Podenco after Tokyo 2020 which he named Ariake after the wheelchair basketball venue at the Games.
Ben wears the number 33 when playing at both club level and international level in homage to his late grandfather.
