Time trial silver as Lane-Wright ramps up World Championship preparations

Crystal Lane-Wright’s preparations for this summer’s Para-cycling Road World Championships continued at pace after a medal-winning performance at the latest World Cup in Emmen.

The double Paralympic medallist opened her weekend with a silver in the women’s C5 time trial before coming home fifth in Sunday’s individual road race.

Next month sees the World Championships take place in Italy from August 2-5 with Lane-Wright, winner of C5 road race bronze in 2011 and 2017, part of the 20-strong team.

The 32-year-old will be encouraged by her current form too with only Poland’s Anna Harkowska getting the better of her in Friday’s time trial.

The two-time Paralympic time trial silver medallist finished in 22:51.68, 11 seconds clear of Lane-Wright but the Brit was still over a minute clear of the rest of the field.

Harkowska again came on top in the road race, finishing in one hour, 40 minutes, with Rio 2016 road race bronze medallist Lane-Wright four minutes and 19 seconds behind in fifth.

There was also an encouraging showed from rising young star Amelia Cass as she went up against two much more experienced riders in the women’s C3 road race.

The 19-year-old finished a lap down on her rivals but it was a useful learning experience with Rio 2016 road race bronze medallist Denise Schindler taking the win ahead of Paralympic champion Jamie Whitmore.

Meanwhile Krispin Gardiner finished 11th in the men’s C4 road race with Alex Pope 19th and 21st in the men’s B time trial and road races.
