Nofio Clwyd swimmer, Rhys Darbey, made his international breakthrough in 2023 as he secured qualification for the Manchester Para Swimming World Championships in the Men’s SM14 200m Individual Medley event.
Darbey - who competes in the S14 class for athletes with an Intellectual Impairment - capped his World Championship debut on home soil by stepping onto the podium, having stormed home on the closing freestyle leg of the race to move through the field into the silver medal spot.
Paris 2024 followed - Darbey’s debut Paralympic Games - and so did further success as part of the all-teenage quartet to claim gold in the S14 mixed 4 x 100m freestyle relay alongside teammates Will Ellard, Poppy Maskill and Olivia Newman-Baronius, as well as individual silver in the 200m Individual medley S14.
