Powerlifting gave Liam a new direction in life after his circumstances changed suddenly in 2017 while studying a sports science degree at Bournemouth University.
He developed transverse myelitis - an inflammation of the spinal cord - which happened on a bus journey to an event to celebrate the end of the term. He describes the injury as his “legs filling up with concrete” before he was airlifted out of the bus and began a seven-month stint in hospital.
Liam, who is a massive West Ham fan, discovered Powerlifting at the Spinal Games and after a lift of 137.5 kg, he was on the development pathway for powerlifting in 2018. He just missed a wildcard entry for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics but his first major event experience came at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games for England. He recorded a best lift of 215kg but finished outside of the medals on bodyweight ratio.
Liam qualified for Paris at the final opportunity by finishing in the top eight of the qualification tournament with a personal best lift of 230 kg despite a pectoral injury he was dealing with at the time in Tbilisi, Georgia.
