James first started skiing on a family holiday in France aged two and despite some initial complaints, quickly fell in love with the sport. He grew up ski racing, initially training on the dry slope at Midlothian Snowsports Centre, Hillend, before progressing to training and competing abroad. While studying at the University of Edinburgh, he became involved in Para Alpine skiing as a way to stay connected to the sport.

Hannan now guides visually impaired skier Fred Warburton. The pair first raced together in February 2025 and have progressed quickly since then, winning multiple podiums in FIS and National Championships races.

At Milano Cortina 2026, Fred and James secured a 7th place finish in the downhill and came in 12th in both the Giant Slalom and the Super G in their debut Games - cheered on by their army of fans the “Fred Heads”.
