Bio
Paris 2024 was Dimitri’s third Paralympic Games where he was one of ParalympicsGB’s most successful athletes as he came home with four medals from his five events. He clinched individual gold medals in both the Épée and the Foil, and joined forces with Oliver Lam-Watson and Piers Gilliver to claim team Épée bronze, following the trio’s silver in the team Foil, the same as their Team achievements at Tokyo 2020.
His Paris performance built upon his previous Paralympics in Tokyo, where he claimed two individual bronzes and won silver and bronze in the Foil and Épée with his teammates.
Dimitri sustained a spinal injury at the age of two after being knocked over by a car but he was always determined to maintain his active lifestyle.
He had originally hoped to become a Paralympian in Wheelchair Basketball until 2009, where fencing became a games option for him at his St Benedict’s school.
Strong medal performances at the UK School Games earned him an invite to train with the ParalympicsGB squad in 2012 and he attended London 2012 as part of the BPA’s Paralympic Inspiration Programme (PIP).
Coutya has been consistent in bringing back medals since his double gold effort at the World Championships in 2017 and is now a mainstay of the squad.
