Wheelchair fencers sign off from Warsaw World Cup with silver
In-form duo Dimitri Coutya and Piers Gilliver wrapped up a medal-laden IWAS Wheelchair Fencing World Cup by helping Great Britain to silver in the men’s foil event.
The pair, who had already secured two medals apiece in the individual events in Warsaw, teamed up with Oliver Lam-Watson and Joshua Waddell to secure a runners up finish on Sunday.
After dispatching Ukraine 45-37 in the round of 16, the quartet then comfortably beat Brazil 45-24 and semi-finalists Korea 45-27 to set up a gold-medal clash with Poland.
A tight encounter followed but it was the home favourites who eventually came through 45-39 to take gold, leaving Great Britain with silver whilst Russia took the bronze.
For Gilliver, that wrapped up the full set of medals in Poland after epee A gold and sabre A bronze earlier in the weekend.
And Coutya also finished on three medals after winning both the men’s foil cat.B and epee B events.
