Shephard, Choong and Rooke lead golden day for GB at Euros

Jack Shephard, Rachel Choong and Martin Rooke led the charge of GB’s stars as the team racked up an incredible seven gold medals on the final day of the European Para-Badminton Championships.

Already guaranteed four titles at the start of the day with several players lining up against each other in Rodez, France, it was a remarkable day of action for Britain’s shuttlers.

Shephard and Krysten Coombs teamed up for the SS6 men’s doubles crown, defeating compatriots Isaak Dalglish and Andrew Martin – as they came from behind in a 15-21 21-10 21-10 success.

Later, Shephard and Coombs faced off in the singles final, Shephard prevailing 17-21 21-10 21-12 in another entertaining clash.

Martin had earlier won a title of his own as he and Choong downed Dalglish and Polish partner Maria Bartusz 21-15 21-13 in the SS6 mixed doubles final.

Women’s singles top seed Choong followed this up with a 21-10 22-20 success against fellow English player and second seed Rebecca Bedford.

Rooke was another player to taste double success as he overcame number one seeded Israeli Amir Levi 21-18 13-21 21-17 in a thrilling WH2 men’s singles final.

And Rooke was to defeat Levi for the second time in just a matter of hours as he and German Thomas Wandschneider got the better of Levi and Frenchman David Toupe in the men’s doubles.

And top seed Daniel Bethell sealed a dominant victory over Ukranian Oleksandr Chyrkovvin in the SL 3 men’s singles – powering to a 21-9 21-7 win.
