Newson clinches gold at Manchester World Cup

Great Britain had immediate success at the Manchester 2020 Road to Tokyo Para Powerlifting World Cup as Zoe Newson claimed gold.

In the first event of the day, the two-time Paralympian ensured top spot on home soil in the women’s up to 41kg category.

Her third lift of 88kg was enough to triumph ahead of Ukraine’s Kseniia Tokar and helped the Brit secure crucial qualification ranking points for the Tokyo Paralympic Games.

There was more medal success for Britain as Olivia Broome came home with a bronze medal in the women’s up to 50kg category.

And Adam Alderman completed the collection for GB on the opening day of competition as he took silver in the men’s up to 49kg category.

He lifted 140kg at the third attempt to finish behind only Azerbaijan’s Parvin Mammadov, while teammate Thomas Smith finished seventh after lifting 97kg.

Competition continues tomorrow, with the likes of Kimberley Dean, Rebecca Bedford, Sean Clare and Mark Swan all in action.
