Ali Jawad continued his stellar 2018 by clinching double success in the World Para Powerlifting European Open Championships.

Records tumbled at the competition in Berck-Sur-Mer, in France, where the Rio Paralympic silver medallist lifted 165kg, a personal best, to blow away the field.

Competitors from outside Europe were also action at the championships meaning two sets of medals were awarded. One to the top three powerlifters overall and the other to the top three Europeans.

And Jawad’s magnificent effort in the -54kg category, which was a new British record, was enough to take both gold medals.

It proved to be a successful afternoon as Jawad’s British teammate Adam Alderman picked up the bronze medal in the same category with a lift of 149kg.

The 2014 world champion said: “Double gold at the European championships, a PB and a new British record at this new class.

“And I even got to share the podium with Adam Alderman what a day! Thank you to everyone for their constant support.”

Olivia Broome also collected a bronze medal in the -50kg section in France.
