Hewett and Reid keep Queen's hopes alive
Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid kept alive their hopes of becoming the first wheelchair doubles champions at Queen’s with victory in their second round-robin fixture.
Rio 2016 Paralympic champion Reid and Hewett beat Daniel Caverzaschi and Stefan Olsson 6-1, 6-1, an impressive way to bounce back from singles disappointment earlier in the day.
Both sets ended with breaks to love, an emphatic way of bouncing back from Friday’s 7-6 (4), 7-5 defeat of Stephane Houdet and Nicolas Peifer.
The two-time Wimbledon champions can add a maiden Queens’ title to their trophy cabinet, but will have to take on a watching brief on Sunday as their previous opponents face off.
Victory also avenged the pair’s singles defeats, with Reid’s hopes ending at the semi-final stage.
He took the first set 6-4 against world number four Houdet but the Frenchman’s serve swung the second and another ace sealed the third set.
Wimbledon champion Olsson proved too strong for Hewett in their singles clash, the Swede prevailing 6-3, 6-3 to advance to Sunday’s final.
