GB Goalball narrowly lose to Portugal in Euro clash
Great Britain’s men were edged out in their second group game of the IBSA Goalball European Championships Group B as they lost 7-5 to Portugal.
The result is a blow to GB’s aim of making an immediate return to the top A pool, after they were relegated last year.
Portugal took an early lead inside the first three minutes with a bouncing shot over the diving British team, and they doubled their advantage 30 seconds later.
The Portuguese’s potent accuracy continued by adding another two goals as GB struggled to find their range due to some impressive defending from their opponents.
But GB were offered some hope of getting themselves back in the contest with a reply four minutes before half-time.
Faye Dale’s side started positively after the interval by scoring twice in quick succession before Portugal regained their composure to take a dominant 6-3 lead.
GB managed to pull two back going in the final quarter but a combination of steadfast Portuguese goalkeeping and accurate throwing led to GB falling just short.
