Barry Schofield
The British Paralympic Association is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Honorary Vice President Barry Schofield, who joined the organisation as its first ever General Secretary back in 1989.
After retiring from a successful career in the financial sector, Barry – a keen sports lover – took on the part-time post (equivalent to a Chief Executive Officer today) which quickly became a full-time passion.
With little resources available, Barry’s drive, enthusiasm and charisma enabled the organisation to obtain a sponsored office and a seconded staff member, kickstarting the evolution to the BPA that exists today.
Stepping down from the role of General Secretary in 1996 after overseeing numerous developments and changes such as the move away from disability specific organisations to National Governing Bodies, Barry then became Honorary Vice President, regularly contributing to BPA events where exercised his charm to help introduce new and influential people to the organisation.
Caz Walton and Barry celebrate the BPA's 30th Anniversary
Retired Paralympian and multiple gold medallist Caz Walton, who first competed for ParalympicsGB at the Tokyo Games in 1964 before joining the organisation as an administrator in 1989 said: “I was fortunate enough to work with Barry for many years and have never met anyone who’s honesty, integrity and drive even came close to his.
“Barry was a caring, compassionate individual who loved Paralympic sport passionately. His dedication to the British Paralympic Association provided the foundation for the organisation to be regarded as one of the leading National Paralympic Committees in the world. An unsung hero, we owe him so much.”
All at the BPA send their heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.
