Bio

Alice Tai has won medals in Paralympic, World, European and Commonwealth events.

She broke onto the scene in 2014 with a strong performance at the 2014 IPC Swimming European Championships in Eindhoven, winning three European medals at the age of just 15.

Her success with 100m backstroke silver and 400m freestyle bronze in the S10 class in Eindhoven was then followed by her first gold with the British 4x100m freestyle relay 34pt quartet.

A highly successful debut IPC Swimming World Championships at Glasgow 2015 came in the form of four medals, including gold in the 4x100m medley relay 34pt alongside three individual bronze medals.

She made her Paralympic debut at Rio 2016 where she competed in five events, winning relay gold in the women’s 4x100m medley relay (34pts) alongside teammates Claire Cashmore, Steph Slater and Stephanie Millward.

The highlight from her individual events was the 100m backstroke S9, where she won bronze.

At the 2018 European Championships in Dublin, Tai stormed to four European titles, adding to her medal haul from the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia, where she won gold and silver.

The 2019 World Para Swimming Championships in London was Tai’s most successful event, where she claimed seven gold medals and a world record of 1:08.04 in the S8 100m backstroke.

Alice was forced to withdraw from the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics and in 2022, she had her right leg amputated to relieve her of constant pain. She returned to action later that year to win Gold for England at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

At the 2023 World Championships in Manchester, she reclaimed the title in the S8 100m backstroke as well as adding silver and bronze medals in the 50m and 100m freestyle events.
