Great Britain’s men were edged out in the opening group stage game of the IBSA Goalball European Championships Group B, as they lost 10-7 to hosts Poland.

GB are bidding for an immediate return to the top A pool after they were relegated last year and will do so if they can record a podium finish in Chorzow.

But they were unable to get off to a winning start, as Poland turned around a one-goal deficit in the second-half to the delight of the home crowd.

It was the hosts who got off to the perfect start, scoring with their first effort, and soon doubled their lead.

But Great Britain fought back, levelling the scores in a frantic first-half, as both sides eventually went into the break locked at 4-4.

And Faye Dale’s side went ahead for the first time at the start of the second period, taking a slim 6-5 lead with just under eight minutes of the contest remaining.

Poland were not to be denied, however, fighting back to lead 9-6 – a lead that eventually proved unassailable despite each side scoring once more before time was up.

GB’s men will continue their campaign against Portugal tomorrow, before facing Slovenia and Spain on a bumper Wednesday to close out the group stages.
