Gilliver's gold

Paralympic silver medallist Piers Gilliver capped off a stunning 2018 with gold in the category A individual epee at the wheelchair fencing World Cup in Kyoto.

The 24-year-old defeated Italy’s Emanuele Lambertini in the final with a 15-6 win over his rival to add World Cup gold to his impressive medal haul for the season.

Gilliver, who was top seed coming into the tournament, lived up to his billing as he won all his matches by five points or more.

It brings to a close a successful year for the athlete, who has won golds at the World Cups in Pisa, Warsaw and Tblisi as well as winning silver at the European Championships in Terni, Italy, in September.

Oliver Lam Watson and Josh Waddell also featured in the tournament, finishing 23rd and 30th respectively.

Elsewhere, there was a bronze medal in the epee category B for Paralympian Dimitri Coutya.

He lost out to eventual winner Ammar Ali, from Iraq, in the semi-finals as he went down 15-10.

Gilliver also finished eighth in the category A sabre, where his Great Britain teammate Matthew Campbell-Hill came in 32nd.

Gemma Collis-McCann also featured at the World Cup in Japan, as she finished 23rd in the women’s category A foil.
